Skip the adapter when you can. Using an adapter to go from 1-1/4" to 2" cuts your tongue weight in half, which takes away capacity you may want for a carrier. Pick a carrier designed for a 1-1/4" hitch instead. Check your hitch's tongue rating and add up the carrier plus cargo weight before you load up for the beach.
